An update on what's happening in Nottingham in April:

Spotlight on gender imbalance and diversity (17 April 2018, London)

BPW is delighted to be supporting The Vote 100 Women in Business Summit

This high-profile forum will celebrate the centenary of the 1918 “Representation of the People Act’, which gave women the vote for the first time by creating a platform for women across different industries to discuss the most important issues facing UK business, including diversity issues, and review how female leadership has changed over the last century.

The event builds on the success of the previous editions of the Women in Business and the Women in Finance summits, which both attracted 250+ senior delegates across the industries, government officials and regulators from across the UK and beyond.

The forum’s interactive format will offer attendees an opportunity to have a diverse and well-informed dialogue about the most effective ways of getting men to join in their efforts to address the gender imbalance at all levels of their organisation, as well as making sure that gender diversity remains high on the business agenda despite all the other pressures firms are facing.

 Other key topics include:

Spotlight on gender imbalance and diversity

BPW UK is proud to support this event   which celebrates the  centenary of the 1918 'Representation  of the People Act'  and brings together a platform of distiguished women from a range of business sectors in a 'well informed dialogue about the most effective ways of getting men to join in the efforts to address the gender imbalance at all levels of their organisation'.

BPW UK gives evidence to the House of Commons Women & Equalities Committee

In the preparations for CSW 61, with the Priority Theme of "Women's economic empowerment in the changing world of work", BPW UK was represented in the UK CSW NGO Alliance by Lynn Everson, who as the owner of a small business was also invited to give evidence to the Women & Equalities Committee in their research on Implementing SDG5 (Gender Equality).

To research the UK position compared with other countries, Lynn invited BPW Federations around the world to contribute, by answering 2 questions:

1.How well are the SDGs being publicised in your country, and are they being implemented by businesses? (if so, are they just the large businesses?)

2. Is your Federation going to join your government delegation at CSW61? Have you asked or been invited?

The 2nd question was posed following discussions at the UK NGO CSW Alliance core group & liaison group meetings, as some countries were included within their government delegations but this was not the practice in the UK.

The full reponses from BPW members worldwide were sent to International Vice President Arzu Ozyol after the meeting of the House of Commons Select Committee on 25 January, to be included in the information packs for BPW members attending CSW 61.

Congratulations to new BPW UK President, Hilarie Tucknott!!

At our AGM during conference in Bristol on 16 April 2016, Hilarie Tucknott was elected President of BPW UK, succeeding Lynn Everson (2013-2016).  Hilarie writes:

President Hilarie addressing conference

I joined BPW in 1989, holding many roles over the years in the Ponteland and Morpeth areas. Since amalgamating with BPW Yorkshire to form BPW Northern Area, I have served as Vice- Chairman of the area and as BPW Northern’s representative on the Federation Executive Committee.

I qualified as an Assistant Teacher in 1973 and throughout my career worked in a variety of Primary Schools in Leicester and in Newcastle upon Tyne. I taught children from many diverse ethnic backgrounds and speaking many different languages. By the end of my career I was a specialist teacher in Early Years Education. Throughout my career I gained the skills of detailed planning, (both short and long term), objective and subjective assessment and mentoring young teachers who were just beginning their training.  Now retired, I work as a volunteer for a local charity that provides inclusion through mental stimulation for people who live in the community and the care system who have dementia.

Congratulations from all the Members of BPW UK!

The new Federation Executive Committee joining Hilarie are:

BPW UK launches Student/Apprentice Membership

BPW UK is delighted to announce it has launched its brand new membership for female Students and Apprentices.

We lobby for Equal Pay, Equal gender representation in the Boardroom, Equal gender representation in public life and Gender friendly employment practices.  Women are consistently under-represented in these areas and we want to change that, and this is partly because they don't feel confident enough to go for the roles they aspire to.

With our huge knowledge base and as part of a massive international network, BPW will give them the skills and confidence they need.

SIX-O and launch of new government survey: Your chance to shape UK priorities on gender equality

At the 6-O meeting with Nicky Morgan on 2 September, BPW and our colleague organisations were informed of the Government Equalities Office’s new public survey on gender equality.

As we approach the twentieth anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action -  the Government wants to hear from women, men and civil society groups on what progress you think is being made by business and the government to improve the lives of women and girls in the UK. As well as delivering a regional roadshow of events the Government will be collecting feedback through a short survey open to all.

The link to the article and survey can be found here: https://www.gov.uk/government/news/your-chance-to-shape-uk-priorities-on-gender-equality

As BPW members our personal input will be greatly valued, so we would like as many members as possible to complete the survey as soon as possible!

Thank you very much for your help on this.

Safe Maiden Voyage to LA
A Newcastle taxi firm has teamed up with a global women's travel network to
ensure that their passengers stay safe while travelling. The pioneering
initiative follows a series of high profile cases where vulnerable people
have been assaulted leading to a number of arrests throughout the North East
and South Yorkshire.
LA Taxis was established in 2009 after a merger between Ace and Lansdowne
Taxis, two of Newcastle's oldest established firms with a combination of
nearly 50 years of history between them. LA is now one of the North East's
driving forces with the largest fleet in Newcastle and a solid reputation
for customer safety, customer service and leading edge technology - all of
which have been put to good use to safeguard its passengers.
In partnership with Maiden Voyage, LA Taxis have produced a set of
guidelines for their drivers to make sure that women and vulnerable
passengers remain safe while travelling. Maiden Voyage is a voluntary
organisation that looks after the interests of women travellers all over the
world particularly with regard to safety in hotels and on public transport.
Many people feel vulnerable out on the streets late at night and LA Taxis
have pledged to provide a safe haven which will take their passengers home
safe and sound every time.
Maiden Voyage's North East representative, Lizzie Adamson-Brown is well
qualified to comment on the safety of travellers as she also runs her own
independent travel consultancy, Travel Counsellors.
"My role with Maiden Voyage is to look after the interest of female
travellers by making sure that hotels and transportation systems are safe
places for women to use. I'm really impressed by LA Taxi's initiative to
look after any one that may be classed as vulnerable."
As part of the Maiden Voyage assessment, LA Taxis demonstrated their
commitment to customer safety to Ms. Adamson-Brown.
LA Taxi's Business Development Manager, Paul Aiken emphasised how important
customer safety is to the firm.
"All of our drivers are licensed by Newcastle City Council and have
undergone training prior to the issue of their license. They've all been
fully vetted, including the completion of a criminal disclosure form. Our
vulnerable persons service is available to anyone who wants the extra
reassurance that they are travelling as safely as possible and will get to
their destination," said Paul.
The firm has introduced a number of procedures and technological advances to
protect their customers including a new App. The App helps to reassure
female passengers as photos of the driver are sent to the customer's tablet
or mobile device upon dispatch of the taxi. In addition, the App pinpoints
the customer's exact geographic position and accurately predicts the time
taken for the driver to arrive. Even before dispatch, security is taken
seriously with all telephone calls recorded both digitally and on paper for
added security. Calls can be retrieved and listened back to if necessary.
"As well as the technology we've introduced simple but effective procedures
for our drivers to follow in certain locations such as standing outside the
taxi as the passenger approaches to heighten the feeling of safety.
Likewise, our drivers will not drive away until our female customers safely
enter their destination and close their door, "said Paul.
The next stage in the protection of their passengers will see LA Taxis
investigating the possibility of installing micro cameras inside the Taxi to
give passengers that added feeling of security.
After the inspection by Maiden Voyage, Ms Adamson-Brown was delighted with
the positive attitude towards safety shown by the taxi firm.
"Travelling by taxi with a relative stranger is a particularly vulnerable
situation for women travellers to find themselves in. That's why we welcome
measures taken by those organisations that recognise this and do everything
within their power to ensure that women not only feel safe and secure but
that they genuinely are. Likewise private hire drivers have a duty of care
to report to the authorities any unusual situations, in particular where it
appears that a female passenger is being taken somewhere against her will."

Mr Aiken agreed, "We make everyone's safety a priority and never compromise
on safety. Our reputation is built upon trust and we want people, especially
those that are in vulnerable situations to be able to trust LA Taxis every
time. "

Females face mid-life pay crisis

Very depressing figures here! BPW UK is committed to redressing the balance. Women are the carers for their children and for their parents, so also struggle to recover the salary needed for the pension which will fund their retirement at 80!

Lack of female engineers may lead to skills crisis

The Institution of Engineering and Technology says the perception that 'engineering is just for men' needs to change if British businesses are to succeed.
